All materials will be written in Modern Taiwanese Language (MTL) which is similar to Romoniazation Taiwanese. "Harnji" (i.e. Chinese characters) or Englis will be provided to facilitate the learning process. MLT will be used as a tool for pronunciation due to it's closeness to the tone of Taiwanese. The focus areas are: listening, and speaking. In Chinese pronunciation (Mandarin), there is no such thing as word stress. Pitch, on the other hand, plays a greater role in Chinese than in English. It actually changes the meaning of the word. The pitch movement is referred to as "tone", and so there are 4 different tones in Chinese pronunciation. Each tone gives a certain meaning to a word.

Correction of common English pronunciation mistakes made by learners with Taiwanese as their first language. Taiwanese language backgrounds 27 common English pronunciation problems. This article first examines some of the differences between Chinese and English phonological systems and then summarizes some of the English pronunciation problems for Chinese learners. The article will ideally help TESOL practitioners become aware of the way in which learners' L1 backgrounds may influence their English pronunciation.
